Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, can rejuvenate puffy, sagging or tired-looking eyes by removing excess fat, skin and muscle from the upper and/or lower eyelids. Dr. Asfa performs this procedure for cosmetic reasons or to improve sight by lifting droopy eyelids out of the patient’s field of vision. During your consultation with Dr. Asfa, he will examine you and discuss your aesthetic goals to determine which procedure is right for you. In general, good candidates for eyelid surgery are healthy individuals who do not have medical conditions that impair healing; non-smokers/non-vapers; and individuals with realistic expectations.

Dr. Asfa may determine that you need one or both of the following eyelid surgeries: upper blepharoplasty and lower blepharoplasty. If you need both procedures, they will be done at the same time. Upper blepharoplasty may include excision of drooping eyelid skin, repair of the muscle that opens the eyes, and removal of excess fat. A lower blepharoplasty corrects under eye bags with repositioning and possible removal of redundant fat and skin. It also treats sagging lower lids that may reveal excess white space beneath your iris (the colored circular portion of your eyes surrounding your black pupil).

Keep in mind that the eyelids are part of the face, and the appearance of drooping upper eyelids may also be due to relaxation of the forehead skin and eyebrow. Dr. Asfa will evaluate your facial anatomy to determine the causes of your eyelid appearance and what procedures might best remedy them. The results of your eyelid surgery will be long-lasting, but may not last forever. Eyelid surgery can correct certain conditions permanently, and you will continue to age naturally. But the results of eyelid surgery will reveal a smoother, more defined eyelid, giving you a more alert, rejuvenated appearance.
